Founder's Day 2025 - THANK YOU!

Letter from the Headmaster

A success from first to last – and look how much we raised!

Saturday was a tremendous day: I congratulate and thank all those involved in making Founder’s Day 2025 such a terrific success.

The day began well, with a service of the highest quality at the parish church, where our 2015 School Captain, Norbert Sobolak, spoke powerfully to the Year 7 boys in the congregation: “Dream so big it scares you.”

The service was followed by the formal elements of the Roll Call and Reading of the School Chronicle, which made the usual impressive spectacle in front of Main Building. Then it was time for everyone to relax and enjoy all the fun of the Friends of Queen Elizabeth’s afternoon fete.

I must thank the FQE Fete Committee for the countless hours they have spent organising the event over recent months, and for their hard work on the day, helped by a small army of parent volunteers. And let’s not forget the prefect team, who also worked tirelessly throughout the day to support the FQE Fete team.

Founder’s Day is our main annual fundraiser for the FQE charity. I am, therefore, delighted to report that we have raised, to date, £40,904.50 – and still rising! That is a magnificent sum significantly exceeding both this year’s £25,000 target and the amount raised last year. The money includes: takings on the day; sponsorship & fete programme advertising revenue; online giving through JustGiving; Gift Aid; and the boys’ own fundraising, through sponsorship from Friday’s eve-of-Founder’s Day House Music competition and the PE department’s House catching competition.

Thank you to everyone who has given so generously. There is still time to donate: our dedicated Founder’s Day JustGiving page remains open. The money will go towards the thoroughgoing refurbishment of two Biology laboratories, helping us to respond effectively to the growing demand for subject-specific science laboratories as the numbers taking A-level sciences here has risen.

Founder's Day 2025
The fete was as enjoyable as ever, with a great variety of food and diverse cultural entertainment on offer. For once, the weather was our friend: it was a very hot day, but a little cloud and even some (unforecast) light rain helped keep people cool in the height of the afternoon, leaving them with the energy to have fun – and, of course, spend freely in a very good cause. Among the most popular attractions was the bowl-at-a-teacher stall, making use of the cricket cage. There was terrific music from QE ensembles and some great dancing on the stage, while the Main School Hall housed a fascinating archival display that included our founding charter of 1573.

Among those who enjoyed the chance to examine that precious artefact so key to our history were representatives of the QE Global Schools programme, from Global Education (GEDU), who attended the celebrations and supported the day.

138%; £34,590 raised of £25,000 target

In summary, then, Founder’s Day 2025 was a resounding success for our whole Elizabethan community – a magnificent team effort enabling all our visitors to enjoy a splendid occasion and helping us to achieve a brilliant fundraising total in support of current and future pupils.

May I end with a request? If you enjoyed this year’s event, please consider volunteering for the Founder’s Day FQE Fete on Saturday 20th June, 2026. Planning will start soon!

FQE Fete programme: don’t miss out!

If you weren’t able to make it on Saturday, why not take a little time to read our colourful 44-page FQE Fete programme now? It’s packed with varied content, from an account of the 18th century execution of a famous QE Governor through to an account of the last ten years by Priya Raykar, doyenne of the FQE fete and many other FQE activities.
